If you have a shady spot in your landscape begging for season-long drama, Jetstream Oakleaf Hydrangea is the shrub you have been searching for. Unlike older varieties that tend to flop over under the weight of their own blooms, this tough, compact beauty stands tall and strong. Starting in early summer, it produces massive, cone-shaped clusters of pristine white flowers that slowly age to a gorgeous blush pink. But the real magic happens in autumn when the deep green, oak-shaped leaves transform into a fiery display of bright orange and crimson red. It is a true four-season plant, offering exfoliating bark that adds striking visual interest even in the dead of winter.
Perfectly sized for modern yards, Jetstream grows into a dense, rounded mound reaching roughly five to six feet tall and four to five feet wide. Here in the mountains, it thrives best with morning sun and protection from the intense afternoon heat, making it an ideal companion for the dappled light under large pine trees. Plant it in well-draining soil rich in organic matter, and provide a thick layer of mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. While hungry deer will occasionally sample a hydrangea, the thick, deeply lobed leaves of the Jetstream make it far less appetizing to local wildlife compared to traditional mophead varieties, giving you a beautiful, low-maintenance focal point that lasts year after year.
