If you’re looking for a plant that combines architectural "cool factor" with iron-clad toughness, the 'Millenium' Allium is a superstar. Unlike the spring-blooming bulbs you plant in the fall, this is a true herbaceous perennial that stays green and lush all summer. I love this plant because it produces perfectly round, 2-inch globes of rosy-purple flowers that look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book. These "lollipops" of color hover on sturdy stems above a tidy mound of glossy, strap-like green foliage that smells faintly of onions when crushed.
