Bring a touch of the tropics to your living space with the Alocasia African Mask. This striking plant, often called an "elephant ear," is celebrated for its dramatic, dark green leaves with prominent, silvery-white veins. Growing up to two feet in height and width, it makes a bold statement on a table or as a floor plant in a bright corner.
The African Mask thrives on bright, indirect light, so find a spot near an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south-facing one. It's a plant that tells you what it needs—if the leaves are pale or scorched, it's getting too much sun. If you notice a lack of growth, it's likely not enough. Keep its soil consistently moist but never soggy, as it hates having wet feet. When you're ready to repot, use Watters Potting Soil and mix in a little extra perlite to ensure the perfect balance of moisture retention and drainage. For a healthy boost, fertilize every few weeks during the growing season with a diluted mixture of Urban Gardener's Super Growth Elixir or Fertilome's All Purpose Houseplant Food. Be aware that this plant is toxic to pets, so be sure to place it out of reach of curious cats and dogs.
