A simple, effective way to keep your harvest for yourself and not for the birds.
First, you'll want to get the right size netting for your tree. Measure the tree's height and width to ensure you have enough netting to cover it completely. Now, the trick is to apply it before the fruit starts to ripen, that's when the birds get really interested.
Drape the netting over the entire tree, ensuring it reaches the ground on all sides. You want to create a complete barrier. If you have a smaller tree, you can use stakes or poles to support the netting and keep it off the foliage. For larger trees, you might need to enlist a helper. Make sure there are no gaps or holes where birds can sneak through.
Secure the netting at the base of the tree by tying it with twine, or using landscape staples to hold it down. This prevents birds from getting underneath. Once the harvest is over, carefully remove the netting, clean it, and store it away for next season. It's a bit of a chore, but well worth it when you're enjoying your own homegrown fruit.
