I get asked a lot about groundcovers for shady spots, and the 'Black Scallop' Ajuga is one of my top recommendations. This is a fantastic plant for adding color and texture to those difficult areas under trees or on shady slopes. It forms a dense, low-growing mat, staying at a compact 3 to 6 inches tall and spreading up to 24 inches wide. The real showstopper here is the foliage. The leaves are a stunning, glossy, dark maroon-purple, which can appear almost black, especially when it gets some morning sun. In the spring, you'll also get a bonus of deep blue flower spikes that rise above the foliage, adding another layer of interest. It's tough, too, tolerating a wide range of soils and conditions as long as it gets some moisture. Plus, because of its low growth and spreading habit, it's great for suppressing weeds. But best of all, our local deer and rabbits tend to leave this one alone, which makes it a truly worry-free choice for your yard.
