Blue star fern

The Blue Star Fern (Phlebodium aureum) brings a touch of wild, woodland magic right into your home with its unique, chalky blue-green fronds that reach out like slender fingers. You will love having this elegant houseplant because it adds an eye-catching splash of cool color and soft texture to any room, typically growing to a very manageable one to two feet tall and wide. Whether you place it on a shaded side table or let it gracefully drape from a hanging basket, you can rest easy knowing this rugged little fern is completely non-toxic and pet-safe for your cats and dogs.

To help your fern thrive, you want to mimic its natural home in the tropical forest canopy by giving it bright, indirect sunlight, such as near an east-facing window. Too much direct sun will quickly bleach its beautiful blue leaves, while too little light will slow its growth. Because it naturally grows on the sides of trees rather than deep in the earth, it needs excellent drainage and consistent moisture, but it detests sitting in soggy soil. Water it thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, and be sure to water the soil around the edge of the pot rather than directly onto the fuzzy rhizomes in the center to prevent crown rot. By giving it a little extra humidity and avoiding waterlogged roots, this reliable fern will reward you with steady, beautiful growth year-round.
