This slow-growing, spherical succulent is a true statement piece, adding unique form and vibrant color with its dense covering of striking golden spines. As it matures, it develops a perfectly round, ribbed shape, eventually reaching an impressive 2-3 feet tall and wide, making it a captivating focal point in any full-sun garden design.
The Golden Barrel Cactus is incredibly tough and low-maintenance, thriving in the arid conditions of zones 9-11 (and often tolerating temperatures down to 20°F in zones 7 and 8 with proper drainage). Its formidable spines make it an excellent choice for landscapes where deer are a concern, as they tend to leave this beauty alone. While javelina can sometimes nibble on cacti, the dense spines of the Golden Barrel offer significant resistance.
For successful planting, ensure excellent drainage by blending Watters Premium Mulch generously with your native soil. This creates the ideal gritty, well-draining environment this cactus needs to flourish and prevent root rot. While mature Golden Barrels are drought-tolerant, a light quarterly feeding with Watters 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food will encourage healthy growth and, for mature specimens, a ring of beautiful yellow flowers atop the plant in summer.
