The Golden Barrel Cactus is incredibly tough and low-maintenance, thriving in the arid conditions of zones 9-11 (and often tolerating temperatures down to 20°F in zones 7 and 8 with proper drainage). Its formidable spines make it an excellent choice for landscapes where deer are a concern, as they tend to leave this beauty alone. While javelina can sometimes nibble on cacti, the dense spines of the Golden Barrel offer significant resistance.

For successful planting, ensure excellent drainage by blending Watters Premium Mulch generously with your native soil.
