The 'Duke' Highbush Blueberry is famous for being one of the earliest-producing varieties, meaning you get large, flavorful, slightly tangy berries weeks before most other blueberries ripen. This reliable, heavy producer is beloved by gardeners for its consistent yields and beautiful, upright, and open growth habit, which makes harvesting those sweet fruits wonderfully easy.
Thriving in Zones 4 through 8, 'Duke' requires Full Sun to produce the sweetest, most abundant harvests. It grows into a handsome shrub, reaching a mature height of 5 feet and a width of 5 feet. While the berries are irresistible to birds (you may need netting!), the woody stems and slightly acidic taste of the leaves make the 'Duke' Highbush Blueberry naturally resistant to deer and rabbits. Remember that for the best yield, you should plant at least two different varieties of Highbush Blueberry for cross-pollination!
Blueberries demand acidic soil, so preparation is critical. When planting, dig a shallow, wide hole and amend the native soil generously with Watters Premium Mulch. This helps acidify the soil and provides the necessary organic matter for moisture retention. Crucially, mix in Watters 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food—this specific blend offers the gentle, balanced nutrients vital for healthy root establishment and the vigor needed to sustain a double-digit pound harvest.
