When buying earthworms, look for "red wigglers" or "composting worms" at Watters Garden Center. These worms are especially good at breaking down organic matter. Avoid common fishing worms, as they aren't suited for garden soil.   

To introduce them to your garden, prepare a spot with plenty of organic matter, like compost or well-rotted manure. Dig a shallow trench or create a small mound, and gently release the worms. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, as they need moisture to thrive.   

Earthworms love a mulch layer on top of your soil; it keeps them cool and provides food. They'll work their way down, improving your soil structure as they go.
