Echeveria are the rosettes that launched a thousand succulent obsessions, and for good reason. These beauties form perfect, symmetric mandalas of fleshy leaves in colors ranging from ghostly pale blues and powdery pinks to deep, moody purples. They are low-growing and compact, making them ideal for container gardens, rockeries, or even living wreaths.

The secret to a happy Echeveria is understanding their native environment: they are mountain dwellers that crave bright light and excellent drainage. In our climate, they need a spot that gets plenty of morning sun but might appreciate a little shelter from the harshest mid-afternoon heat in summer. The "soak and dry" method is non-negotiable here. Water them thoroughly until water runs out the bottom, then wait until the soil is bone dry before watering again. If the leaves start to flatten out or stretch tall, your plant is begging for more light!
