If you are looking for a houseplant that truly makes a statement, the Ficus Ruby, or 'Ruby' Rubber Plant, is an absolute gem. Its striking variegated leaves boast a mesmerizing blend of deep green, creamy white, and vibrant pink or ruby-red hues, adding a sophisticated pop of color to any room. This isn't just a pretty face; it’s a remarkably resilient and easy-to-care-for plant, perfect for both seasoned plant parents and those just starting their indoor garden journey.
The Ficus Ruby can grow quite tall indoors, often reaching heights of 6 to 10 feet, making it an impressive floor plant that can truly transform a space. It thrives in bright, indirect light. Think of a spot near an east or west-facing window, or a few feet away from a south-facing one with sheer curtains to diffuse intense afternoon sun. While it loves a good amount of light to maintain its vibrant colors, too much direct sun can scorch its beautiful foliage. When it's time to repot your Ficus Ruby, perhaps every 1-2 years as it grows, we highly recommend using Watters Potting Soil. It provides the ideal drainage and nutrient-rich environment these plants crave.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy, allowing the top inch or two to dry out between waterings. For an extra boost of vitality and to keep those stunning colors popping, consider feeding your Ficus Ruby during the growing season (spring and summer). A monthly application of Urban Gardener's Super Growth Elixir, applied as a foliar spray directly to the leaves, can work wonders for overall health and new growth. Alternatively, a balanced liquid fertilizer like Fertilome's All Purpose Houseplant Food is also excellent, either mixed into the water or sprayed directly on the foliage. It's important to note that while beautiful, Ficus Ruby is not pet-safe and can cause irritation if ingested, so be sure to place it out of reach of curious paws.
