Giant Sequoia is a tree that inspires awe! While these majestic giants are native to the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, and the conditions here in Prescott are pretty different, they can sometimes be grown successfully with careful attention.
The Giant Sequoia is known for its immense size and longevity, and it is truly a living monument. They possess a reddish-brown, fibrous bark and scale-like evergreen needles. Growing one of these here would require providing well-draining, slightly acidic soil and ensuring consistent moisture, especially when young. They thrive in full sun and appreciate protection from harsh winds.
While not a typical choice for our Arizona landscapes due to the differing climate and soil conditions, select a reputable source for your seedling if you're determined to try. Amend your planting area generously with organic matter and Watters Premium All Purpose Plant Food to give it the best possible start. Consistent watering will be crucial, especially during our hot, dry periods. A layer of Watters Premium Mulch will help to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Growing a Giant Sequoia here is a long-term commitment and a bit of an experiment, but the reward of nurturing such a magnificent tree can be quite special.
