Catching the Goldfish Plant: Nematanthus Ubatuba
If you are looking for a houseplant that truly brings a bit of "life" to the room, let me introduce you to the Nematanthus Ubatuba. Often called the Goldfish Plant, this particular variety is a real showstopper. It sports dark green, oval leaves with a surprise on the back—a deep red center on the underside that peeks through as the stems begin to trail. The flowers are the real treat, though; they are a lovely pink with a bright yellow "mouth," looking just like a school of little fish swimming through green waves.
To keep your Ubatuba happy, think of its Brazilian rainforest home. It craves bright, indirect light to produce those iconic blooms. I recommend a well-draining, airy potting mix—an African Violet blend works wonders here—because this plant likes its soil moist but never soggy. If the air in your home is a bit dry, a regular misting with room-temperature water will keep those succulent-like leaves looking lush and vibrant.
Ken’s Expert Tips
-
Light: Place near an east-facing window for 10-12 hours of filtered light.
-
Pruning: Pinch back the tips after flowering to encourage a bushier, fuller look.
-
Potting: These beauties actually bloom better when they are a little snug in their pots, so do not rush to move them.
