Looking for a plant that's as tough as it is unique in your Prescott garden? The Gopher Plant (often Euphorbia rigida) is a fantastic choice, known for its striking blue-green, succulent foliage and vibrant, chartreuse-yellow blooms in late winter to early spring. It's a real standout, bringing architectural interest and early season color when many other plants are still sleeping.
This resilient plant typically grows to about 2 feet tall and spreads up to 3 feet wide, creating attractive clumps. It thrives in our Zone 7 climate, loving full sun and well-drained soil. In fact, it's incredibly drought-tolerant once established, making it a perfect addition to water-wise landscapes.
Now, about those pesky gophers and rabbits – the "Gopher Plant" lives up to its name! It's highly resistant to both deer and rabbits due to its milky sap (a characteristic of the Euphorbia family, which can be irritating if it gets on your skin, so wear gloves when handling!).
When you plant, ensure excellent drainage is provided. We recommend blending your native soil with Watters Premium Mulch. This not only improves the soil structure but also helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, giving your Gopher Plant a happy home. And for that extra boost, incorporate 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food into the planting hole. This will give it the essential nutrients it needs to establish strong roots and produce those fantastic blooms.
