You're setting a mechanical trap inside their tunnels. Locate an active gopher tunnel. Look for fresh mounds of dirt and probe the soil with a stick or metal rod to find the main runway. Once you've found it, carefully dig down to expose the tunnel.
Now, set your trap. The key is to place the trap deep within the tunnel, where the gopher will likely travel.
Place two traps, facing opposite directions in the same tunnel, as you don't know how the gopher will approach. Be sure to anchor the traps, so they don’t get pulled into the tunnel. Cover the hole with a board or piece of cardboard, and then cover that with soil. This blocks out light and air, making it more appealing for the gopher to enter.
Check your traps daily. Once you've caught a gopher, remove it and reset the traps. Repeat the process until you no longer seeing fresh gopher activity. It's a bit of work but a sure way to reclaim your garden.
