For a truly unique and easy-care addition to your indoor plant collection, look no further than the Senecio macroglossus, commonly known as Wax Ivy or Natal Ivy! This vigorous, trailing vine will quickly become a focal point with its glossy, ivy-like leaves that are often variegated with creamy white edges, sometimes blushing pink or purple in bright light. It’s a fantastic choice for hanging baskets, allowing its graceful stems to cascade, or you can train it to climb up a small trellis for a lush, vertical display.
Wax Ivy can grow quite long, reaching lengths of 3 to 6 feet or more as a trailing plant, but it’s easily pruned to maintain your desired size and shape. It thrives in bright, indirect light, though it can tolerate some morning sun. Place it near a south, east, or west-facing window to encourage the best color on its variegated leaves. While beautiful, it's important to know that Senecio macroglossus is considered mildly toxic if ingested by pets, potentially causing gastrointestinal upset. Always place it where curious paws and mouths cannot reach.
When it's time to repot, ensure your Wax Ivy has excellent drainage by using Watters Potting Soil, which is perfectly suited for succulents and plants that prefer well-draining conditions. To keep your Wax Ivy looking its best, fertilize regularly during the growing season with Urban Gardener's Super Growth Elixir or Fertilome's All Purpose Houseplant Food. Your Wax Ivy will thank you with stunning growth and vibrant foliage!
