If you’re looking for the classic, elegant look of Ivy but struggle with the "fussy" nature of traditional English Ivy, the Wax Ivy (Senecio macroglossus) is your perfect match. I often tell folks at the garden center that this is nature’s best "impostor." While it looks exactly like a delicate Ivy vine, it’s actually a succulent! Its leaves are thick, waxy, and stiff, which helps it hold onto moisture and thrive in our dry Arizona air much better than true Ivy.
I love this plant for a hanging basket because it’s a vigorous grower that creates a dense, cascading curtain of arrowhead-shaped leaves. If you’re lucky, it will even reward you with small, pale yellow flowers that look like tiny daisies. Because it’s a succulent at heart, it’s much more forgiving if you forget to water it for a few days. Just give it plenty of bright, indirect light—or even a little morning sun—and let the soil dry out significantly between soakings. It’s the look of a cottage garden with the toughness of a desert native.
