For a charming and incredibly easy-care addition to your garden, consider Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum species)! These delightful succulent perennials form rosettes of fleshy leaves, with the larger "hen" surrounded by smaller "chicks" that emerge and multiply, creating a charming cluster. They typically grow to a compact 3-6 inches tall and spread up to 12 inches or more, slowly forming a low, captivating mat of various textures and colors—from shades of green, red, purple, and even silver. In summer, mature rosettes may send up unique flower stalks with star-shaped blooms before the "hen" rosette gracefully completes its life cycle, leaving behind its plentiful "chicks." They're perfect for rock gardens, containers, between stepping stones, or in any spot where you want low-growing, intriguing texture.

Hen and Chicks are incredibly resilient and thrive in full sun, which our Prescott climate provides in abundance. They are exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, requiring very little water, making them an excellent choice for water-wise landscapes. You'll also appreciate that they are highly deer and rabbit resistant, so you won't have to worry about critter damage.

When planting your Hen and Chicks, excellent drainage is absolutely crucial to prevent root rot. Blend Watters Premium Mulch with your garden's native soil. This mixture will significantly improve soil structure and drainage, while also slowly releasing beneficial organic nutrients. To give these tough little succulents the best start, incorporate Watters 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food into the planting area. This specific blend provides the balanced nutrition needed for strong root development and vibrant foliage, ensuring your Hen and Chicks flourish. After planting, water thoroughly to settle the soil, then allow the soil to dry out completely between subsequent waterings.
