Picture a low-growing, spreading evergreen with dense, feathery, silvery-blue foliage that forms a beautiful star-like shape. This charming juniper typically reaches a height of 1 to 3 feet and can spread 3 to 4 feet wide, creating a lovely carpet of color and texture in rock gardens, along borders, or as a unique groundcover. Its year-round color provides consistent visual interest.
Now, when it comes to sunshine, the Blue Star Juniper thrives in full sun, where its silvery-blue color will be most intense and vibrant. While it can tolerate some light shade, especially during the hottest part of the day in Arizona, a sunny location will result in the best color and densest growth. And for those of you concerned about browsing critters, junipers are generally not a favorite food source for deer.
To help your Blue Star Juniper establish and maintain its beautiful blue color and texture, I recommend planting it in well-draining soil. When planting, incorporate Watters Premium Mulch to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide a healthy root environment. In early spring, give it a light feeding with Watters 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food to encourage strong, healthy growth and that lovely silvery-blue foliage. Once established, it's a relatively low-maintenance and drought-tolerant choice.
Plant a Blue Star Juniper in your garden, and enjoy its unique color, interesting texture, and easy-care nature. It's a fantastic way to add year-round interest to your landscape! Happy planting!
