If you’re looking for a plant that looks like a sparkling, frosted piece of living art, the 'Ice Breaker' Korean Fir (Abies koreana) is one of the most stunning dwarf conifers ever discovered. I love this plant because of its incredible "inside-out" appearance. Each tiny, succulent-like needle is dramatically curled and twisted upward, revealing the bright, silvery-white undersides. This gives the entire plant a shimmering, "frosted" look that appears as if it’s covered in ice crystals, even on the hottest July day in Prescott.
For our mountain gardeners, 'Ice Breaker' is a sophisticated, slow-growing gem that is perfect for small spaces. It was originally found as a "witch’s broom" (a natural mutation) on a standard Korean Fir, so it stays naturally compact, forming a tidy, flattened globe that eventually develops into a small, structural pyramid. It thrives in our cool mountain nights but appreciates protection from the intense afternoon sun and likes its roots kept cool with a good layer of mulch. Because it grows only about 1–3 inches per year, it is a prized specimen for rock gardens, trough containers, or as a focal point in a "zen" inspired landscape.
