Growing a Bloodgood Japanese Maple here in Prescott takes a bit of care, but the results are truly worth it. That deep, rich burgundy foliage is a sight to behold, adding a touch of elegance to any mountain garden.
These maples prefer a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade. Our intense afternoon sun can scorch those delicate leaves, so a sheltered spot is key. Think about planting it on the east side of your home or under the dappled shade of taller trees.
Bloodgoods like well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Amend your planting hole with plenty of Watters Premium Mulch, and if your soil is particularly alkaline, consider adding some soil sulfur to lower the pH.
Watering is also important, especially in our dry climate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. A good layer of mulch around the base of the tree will help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Please protect it from our strong winds. A sheltered location is ideal, and you can stake it for the first year or two to help it establish a strong root system. With a bit of attention, you can enjoy the stunning beauty of a Bloodgood Japanese Maple right here in our mountain landscape.
