The Narrowleaf Milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis) is a fantastic choice for a water-wise garden that also supports our precious Monarch butterflies. This native beauty features slender, almost needle-like leaves and clusters of delicate white to pale pink or purplish flowers that bloom throughout the summer, attracting a variety of pollinators. Growing to a height of 2-3 feet and spreading about a foot wide, it has an upright, airy form that fits well in naturalistic landscapes, borders, or even containers.
This milkweed is exceptionally well-suited to our Arizona climate, thriving in full sun and demonstrating excellent drought tolerance once established. It's a low-maintenance plant that doesn't require a lot of fuss, making it perfect for the busy gardener. Importantly, Narrowleaf Milkweed is a crucial host plant for Monarch butterfly caterpillars, providing the food source they need to grow and develop. Deer tend to leave it alone, allowing the butterflies to have their feast.
To give your Narrowleaf Milkweed the best start, plant it using Watters Premium Mulch. This will help the soil retain what little moisture it needs and suppress weeds. While it doesn't typically require heavy fertilization, a spring application of Watters Flower Power can encourage even more of those lovely, butterfly-attracting blooms. By planting Narrowleaf Milkweed, you're not only adding a touch of delicate beauty to your garden but also playing a vital role in supporting the Monarch butterfly population.
