Want a delightful, easy-care succulent that offers classic charm in a compact size? The Crassula ovata 'Mini', often simply called Mini Jade Plant, is a fantastic choice! This miniature version of the beloved Jade plant boasts thick, glossy, oval-shaped leaves that can develop a beautiful reddish blush on the edges when given ample light. Its sturdy, tree-like stems give it a sculptural quality, making it a living piece of art for your tabletop or windowsill.
The Mini Jade is perfect for smaller spaces, typically reaching a height of 6-12 inches, though it can grow a bit larger over many years with ideal conditions. Its slow growth habit means you won't need to repot it frequently, making it a low-maintenance companion.
For your Mini Jade to truly flourish, bright, indirect light is key. Place it near a south or west-facing window, ensuring it receives at least 4-6 hours of good light daily. While it enjoys bright conditions, protect it from intense, direct afternoon sun, especially in the Arizona climate, as this can scorch its leaves. A little morning sun is generally fine and can help bring out those lovely reddish leaf margins.
When it's time to repot your Mini Jade, drainage is paramount. Succulents hate soggy feet! We highly recommend using a specialized succulent or cactus potting mix, or you can create your own by mixing Watters Potting Soil with plenty of perlite or coarse sand to ensure excellent drainage. Always choose a pot with drainage holes. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, reduce watering significantly as the plant enters a period of slower growth.
While Mini Jades are not heavy feeders, a little nourishment during the growing season (spring and summer) can encourage healthy, robust growth. Apply a diluted liquid fertilizer, such as Urban Gardener's Super Growth Elixir or Fertilome's All Purpose Houseplant Food, at half strength every 2-4 weeks.
A very important note for pet owners: Crassula ovata 'Mini' (and all Jade plants) are toxic to pets if ingested, causing symptoms like vomiting, depression, and incoordination. Always keep your Mini Jade out of reach of curious cats, dogs, and other household animals.
