Gulf Stream Nandina – a fantastic choice for adding year-round color and texture to your landscape! Ken Lain here, eager to share why this hardy and attractive shrub deserves a spot in your garden.
Picture a semi-dwarf evergreen, typically reaching about three to four feet tall and wide, with a lovely, upright, and slightly vase-shaped habit. The foliage is truly something special, emerging as bright coppery-bronze in the spring, maturing to a vibrant bluish-green in the summer, and then putting on a spectacular show of fiery orange and red hues in the fall and winter. It’s like having four seasons of interest packed into one plant! You might even see clusters of creamy-white flowers in the spring, followed by bright red berries in the fall, adding another layer of visual appeal.
The Gulf Stream Nandina is quite adaptable, thriving in full sun to partial shade. The more sun it gets, the more intense its fall and winter color will be. It’s also quite drought-tolerant once established, making it a great choice for our Arizona climate. And the good news for those dealing with deer and rabbits is that nandinas are generally not their preferred snack.
To give your Gulf Stream Nandina the best start and keep those colors vibrant, plant it in well-drained soil. After planting, spread a layer of Watters Premium Mulch around the base. This will help conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and keep weeds at bay. In the spring, applying Watters 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food will provide the nutrients it needs for healthy growth and those beautiful seasonal color changes.
The Gulf Stream Nandina is excellent for adding year-round interest to borders, foundation plantings, or even in containers. Its manageable size and striking foliage make it a landscape winner!
