If you want a groundcover that turns a barren patch of dirt into a sea of delicate color, New Mexico Primrose is the tough-as-nails solution you have been looking for. This vigorous performer stays low to the ground, usually reaching about 6 to 12 inches tall, but it loves to spread its wings and fill in wide sunny spots with soft, silver-green foliage. Come late spring, it explodes with large, tissue-paper blooms that open white and fade to a lovely glowing pink as the day progresses. Because it is a native of the high desert, it thrives in the most punishing full sun and thrives on very little supplemental water once its roots are down. Its nectar is a favorite for evening primrose moths and bees, yet its slightly fuzzy texture and internal chemistry make it a very low priority for browsing deer and rabbits. It is the ultimate choice for erosion control on a sunny slope or adding a romantic, wild look to a water-wise landscape.
