Perlite, that lightweight, white, volcanic glass, is a real workhorse in the garden, especially when you're looking to improve soil structure and drainage. Think of it as adding a bit of air and space to your soil, which many plants love.
You’ll want to incorporate perlite into your garden soil or potting mixes when you're dealing with heavy, compacted soil, or when you're growing plants that prefer well-draining conditions. That includes things like succulents, cacti, and many container plants. Spring planting and fall soil preparation are ideal times to add perlite.
How you use it depends on what you're planting. For container gardening, mix perlite with your potting soil at a ratio of about one part perlite to two or three parts soil. This creates a light, airy mix that allows water to drain freely.
You can also use perlite for starting seeds or rooting cuttings. Its sterile nature and excellent drainage make it a great medium for delicate young plants. Just mix it with peat moss or vermiculite for an ideal seed-starting blend.
Remember, perlite doesn't decompose, so it will continue to improve your soil structure for years. It's a simple, effective way to create a healthier growing environment for your plants.
