The captivating Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura) is a plant that puts on a show. You'll love this one because of its distinct, velvety leaves, patterned with striking red veins and light green centers. Its common name comes from a unique habit: every evening, its leaves fold upward, resembling hands clasped in prayer, and then flatten out again in the morning light.
To keep those beautiful leaves happy and supple, the Prayer Plant needs bright, indirect light. Never place it in direct sun, as the intensity will fade those lovely colors and scorch the delicate leaves. This is a tropical understory plant, so it loves humidity! If you notice the leaf edges turning brown or crispy, that’s your plant telling you the air is too dry. I suggest grouping it with other plants or using a pebble tray.
For watering, consistency is key. Keep the soil consistently moist—not soggy—and only water with purified or distilled water if your tap water is very hard. This little bit of extra care is what helps it truly thrive and reward you with its fascinating movement.
