Add a unique, cascading element to your indoor plant collection with the Rat Tail Cactus, Aporocactus flagelliformis. This unique cactus is known for its long, cylindrical stems that can trail several feet, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets where its unusual form can truly shine. These stems can grow up to 3-6 feet long, so give it some room to dangle!
The Rat Tail Cactus thrives in bright, direct sunlight, mimicking its native desert conditions, so a south or west-facing window is ideal. While it's a cactus, it's actually an epiphytic variety, meaning it naturally grows on other plants (like trees) in its native habitat. This means it appreciates a bit more humidity and consistent moisture than typical desert cacti, though it still needs excellent drainage.
A great feature of this plant is its non-toxic nature, making it generally safe for homes with pets. However, the stems do have spines, so it is wise to place it out of reach of curious paws and hands to avoid any irritation.
When repotting your Rat Tail Cactus, opt for cactus and succulent mix, to ensure the sharp drainage that cacti need. For feeding, during the growing season (spring and summer), use Urban Gardener's Super Growth Elixir or Fertilome's All Purpose Houseplant Food, diluted to half strength for cacti and succulents, every month or two. This will encourage not only healthy stem growth but also its beautiful, bright pink or red tubular flowers that appear in spring and early summer.
