Looking for an extremely tough, vibrant groundcover that laughs at drought and sun in your Zone 7 or 8 landscape? The Red Mountain Flame Ice Plant (Delosperma cooperi) is an outstanding choice! This resilient succulent forms a tight, weed-suppressing mat of fleshy, evergreen foliage, providing year-round texture. Starting in late spring and lasting through summer, this plant is covered in spectacular, bright, almost neon, fuchsia-red flowers. It truly is a "flame" of color against the green foliage.
Ideal for rock gardens, hillsides, or between stepping stones, this Ice Plant thrives in full sun and remains compact, only reaching 3–6 inches tall while spreading up to 2 feet wide. Once established, it requires very little water, making it a dream for water-wise gardening. Plus, its tough, succulent texture means it is highly resistant to damage from deer and rabbits.
To ensure your Ice Plant starts strong, the key is drainage! Mix your native soil with a generous amount of Watters Premium Mulch when planting; this prevents soggy roots and keeps the soil airy. After planting, apply Watters 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food around the base. This provides the essential, balanced nutrients that will fuel its vigorous spread and prolific, long-lasting bloom cycle. Water lightly to get it settled, then allow the sun to do the rest!
