Ric Rac Cactus

If you are looking for a houseplant that instantly becomes a living piece of art, the Ric Rac Cactus (Disocactus anguliger) is an incredible addition to your indoor garden. Famous for its deeply lobed, zig-zag stems that look exactly like a bright green rickrack ribbon, it adds a striking, architectural texture to any room. This is a trailing beauty, with cascading stems that can gracefully reach three to four feet long as it matures, making it an absolute showstopper for a hanging basket or a tall bookshelf. To keep those unique wavy stems strong and vibrant, simply place it in a spot that receives bright, indirect light; too much direct sun will scorch the foliage, while deep shade will cause the new growth to become thin and spindly. Best of all, if you share your home with curious cats or dogs, you can relax entirely; this wildly textured houseplant is completely non-toxic and pet-safe.

The secret to keeping your Ric Rac Cactus thriving is understanding its roots. Unlike the dry desert cacti you might be familiar with, this plant actually originates from the tropical rainforests of Mexico, where it grows as an epiphyte nestled high in the branches of trees. This means it appreciates slightly more frequent watering than a standard cactus, but its roots still need plenty of air to breathe. Plant it in a rich, highly porous potting soil mixed with orchid bark and perlite, and always ensure your container has ample drainage holes at the bottom. You should water thoroughly only when the top two inches of the soil feel completely dry to the touch, which prevents the heavy, soggy conditions that quickly lead to root rot. By mastering this simple, mindful rhythm, you cultivate a resilient, trailing masterpiece that brings the wild energy of the tropics indoors, guiding you on a joyful journey of botanical discovery even when you cannot be out digging in the backyard.
