I love these plants because of the way their leaves grow in a circular "rosette" pattern, looking just like a collection of tiny green umbrellas. Whether you choose the large-leafed variety or the more compact "Dwarf" version, they add a wonderful architectural element that fills a room with life.

I often recommend Schefflera for bright living rooms or entryways because they are incredibly reliable and adaptable. Here in our dry Arizona air, they do remarkably well as long as they aren't sitting in a draft. They love bright, indirect light, and you’ll notice that if they don’t get enough sun, they might get a little "leggy" as they reach for the window. The trick to a happy Umbrella Tree is to let the soil dry out significantly between waterings—they much prefer to be on the dry side than to have "soggy feet."
