If you’re looking for a plant that brings "big-bloom" energy to the late-summer garden, 'Mr. Goodbud' Sedum is the ultimate gentleman. I love this variety because it fixes the one common issue with older upright sedums—flopping. 'Mr. Goodbud' is bred for incredibly sturdy, purple-tinted stems that stay upright and organized, even when topped with its massive, heavy flower clusters. The foliage is a beautiful, thick, blue-green with serrated edges, providing a lush, cool look throughout the spring and early summer before the big show begins.
For my neighbors here in Prescott, 'Mr. Goodbud' is an award-winning performer (literally, it’s an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner!). It is exceptionally drought-tolerant and thrives in our rocky, lean soils and intense mountain sun. In August, it produces large, flat-topped flower heads that start as creamy-colored buds and open into a vibrant, bi-colored display of brilliant mauve-pink. These nectar-rich blooms are an absolute magnet for monarch butterflies and honeybees. As the weather cools, the flowers mature into a rich smoky-red, providing fantastic architectural interest through our first Arizona snows.
