If you’re looking for a plant that brings a "warm glow" to your garden even in the middle of winter, 'Winter Fire' Sedum is a spectacular choice. I love this variety because it is a true seasonal chameleon. During the spring and summer, the needle-like foliage is a refreshing, bright chartreuse-green. But as soon as our crisp Prescott autumn air hits, the plant begins its dramatic transformation, turning a brilliant, fiery orange-red that stays vibrant throughout the coldest months of the year.
For our high-elevation gardeners, 'Winter Fire' is a "mountain-tough" groundcover. It is a variety of Sedum reflexum, meaning it is exceptionally drought-tolerant and can handle the thin, rocky soils common in our area. It stays low to the ground (reaching only about 3–6 inches tall) and spreads to form a thick, weed-smothering mat. In the summer, it produces clusters of cheerful yellow star-shaped flowers that contrast beautifully with its green foliage. It’s the perfect plant for a sunny rock garden, a "spiller" in a winter-interest container, or for adding much-needed color to a dormant winter landscape.
