Meet the Semponium 'Destiny': A Dark Beauty for Your Garden
If you’re looking for a plant that stops people in their tracks, let me introduce you to Semponium 'Destiny'. This plant is a true modern marvel—a groundbreaking cross between Aeonium and Sempervivum. It takes the best of both worlds: the stunning, large rosettes of an Aeonium and the rugged cold-hardiness of a Sempervivum. What really sets 'Destiny' apart is its deep, dark purple—almost black—foliage that holds its rich color all year long, even in the heat of summer.
I like to call this the "architectural anchor" of a container garden. It grows in a beautiful multi-branching habit, reaching about 15 inches tall and wide. To keep those dark rosettes tight and vibrant, give it plenty of bright sun. While it’s tougher than its Aeonium parents, it still appreciates well-drained soil; I recommend a gritty succulent mix to ensure the roots stay dry between deep waterings.
Ken’s Growing Secrets
-
Light: Full sun to partial shade. More sun equals deeper purple hues.
-
Water: Drench the soil, then let it dry out completely. It's very drought-tolerant!
-
Winter Care: It’s hardy down to about 25°F, but if a hard frost is coming, bring your pots onto the porch for protection.
