If you’ve struggled with the delicate nature of the String of Pearls, let me introduce you to its hardier, fast-growing cousin: the String of Bananas (Curio radicans). This succulent is a workhorse in the world of trailing plants, featuring thick, succulent leaves shaped exactly like miniature green bananas. It’s the perfect choice for a high shelf where you want to see a "curtain" of greenery develop quickly.
In my experience at the nursery, these plants are much more forgiving than other "String of" varieties. They handle a bit more light and are less prone to fussiness, but they still demand excellent drainage. Plant yours in a porous potting soil and place it in a spot with bright, indirect light—though a little morning sun really helps those "bananas" stay plump and vibrant. Always check the soil before watering; if the top inch is dry, it’s time for a drink. This plant is a true joy to watch as it trails toward the floor, bringing a lush, tropical feel to your home.
