The Snow in Summer (Cerastium tomentosum) is the perfect solution for gardeners who want to transform a rocky slope or a drab garden edge into a shimmering sea of white. This vigorous groundcover stays low, typically reaching only 6 to 10 inches tall, but it spreads beautifully to create a dense, woolly carpet of silver-gray foliage. To see it at its best, plant it in a spot with full sun; the brighter the light, the more intense that silvery sheen becomes. True to its name, in late spring and early summer, the plant is completely smothered in tiny, star-shaped white blossoms that look just like a fresh snowfall. Because of its unique felt-like leaves, it is naturally deer and rabbit resistant, as the local critters tend to leave the fuzzy texture alone. It is an exceptionally hardy choice for our mountain climate, thriving in poor soil and requiring very little water once it finds its footing.
