Hello there, fellow fruit enthusiast and diligent gardener! Are you dreaming of harvesting your own incredibly sweet and juicy berries, bursting with fresh flavor, right from your backyard here in Prescott? Let me tell you about growing Strawberries – it's an incredibly rewarding experience that brings the taste of pure summer joy directly to your plate! Imagine picking plump, ripe berries for your breakfast, desserts, or just a healthy snack.
Strawberry plants typically form compact mounds, spreading about 12 to 18 inches wide and reaching around 8 to 12 inches tall, making them perfect for traditional garden beds, raised beds, containers, or even hanging baskets. They absolutely thrive in full sun, needing at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily to produce their sweetest fruit. While no plant is truly immune to all critters, a healthy strawberry patch is often less bothered by some common garden pests.
To give your strawberries the best start and ensure a bountiful harvest, plant them in well-draining, rich soil. Then, apply a generous layer of Watters Premium Mulch around your plants. This is incredibly important in our Prescott climate to help retain soil moisture, keep the roots cool, suppress weeds, and keep those ripening berries clean and off the soil. For robust plant health and an abundance of those delicious fruits, feed your strawberries in the spring when new growth appears, and again after any major fruiting period, with 7-4-4 All-Purpose Plant Food. This balanced nutrition will ensure they produce a fantastic crop for you to enjoy!
