STRING OF BUTTONS/PEARLS 6in

There is something truly magical about plants that spill over the edges of a ceramic pot like living jewelry. Two of my absolute favorites for adding texture to your home are the String of Buttons (Crassula perforata) and the String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus). While they both love a sunny windowsill, they bring very different personalities to your garden.

The String of Buttons is a stacker; its triangular leaves look like they’ve been threaded right through the stem. It’s a hardy soul that blushes a beautiful rosy-pink when it gets enough light. On the flip side, the String of Pearls is famous for its delicate, pea-like beads that trail downward. The secret to success with both is the "soak and dry" method. Wait until the soil is bone-dry—and for the Pearls, wait until those little beads look just a bit puckered—before watering thoroughly. Use a well-draining cactus mix to keep their "feet" from getting soggy. Give them plenty of bright, filtered light, and they will reward you with a spectacular vertical show.
