If you love the look of trailing succulents but want something a bit sturdier than the classic "pearls," the String of Tears (Curio citriformans) is an absolute gem. While its cousins have round leaves, this variety features teardrop-shaped foliage that points upward along the vine. I think they look like tiny, pinstriped raindrops or even little green lemons—in fact, if you look closely, you’ll see beautiful translucent "windows" on the leaves that help the plant soak up sunlight!
I often recommend the String of Tears to my neighbors here in Prescott because it tends to be a bit more robust and faster-growing than the String of Pearls. It creates a dense, architectural "spiller" effect that looks magnificent in a hanging basket or cascading over the side of a stone planter. Because it’s a succulent native to dry regions, it’s perfectly adapted to our low humidity. Just give it a spot with bright, indirect light and remember the golden rule: wait for the soil to dry out completely before giving it a deep soak.
