The String of Turtles (Peperomia prostrata) is a tiny treasure that never fails to delight. This delicate vining plant features small, succulent leaves with intricate patterns that look just like the shells of miniature sea turtles. Unlike many of the "String of" succulents we talk about, this Peperomia is a rainforest native, meaning it enjoys a bit more humidity and a little less intense sun than its desert cousins.
To keep your turtles "swimming" along, find a spot with bright, indirect light. Direct Arizona sun is too harsh and will fade those beautiful shell patterns. I always tell folks to be careful with the watering can—while it likes a more consistent moisture level than a cactus, it still hates sitting in a puddle. Wait until the top inch of soil feels dry, then water thoroughly. Because these turtles have shallow root systems, they thrive in a wide, shallow pot with a well-draining mix like Watters Potting Soil. It’s a slow and steady grower, but a healthy plant is a true work of art.
