If you want a houseplant that doubles as a conversation piece, the Stromanthe Sanguinea—often called the 'Triostar'—is it. This plant is spectacular, featuring long leaves splashed with cream, green, and pink on top, and a vivid, blood-red magenta underneath. Being part of the Prayer Plant family, it has a fascinating habit: the leaves fold up vertically at night, showing off that brilliant red underside as if the plant is going to sleep.

The key to keeping a Stromanthe happy, especially in our drier climate, is humidity. If you see crispy brown edges, the air is likely too dry. I recommend placing it on a tray of pebbles filled with water or keeping it in a bright bathroom. Also, these beauties can be sensitive to the minerals in tap water. Using distilled or rainwater will keep those variegated leaves looking flawless and vibrant.
