Succulent Gasteria Durban

The Gasteria 'Durban' is a rugged, beautifully textured succulent that brings a touch of wild, earthy charm right into your living room without asking for much in return. You will love this striking little plant for its thick, tongue-shaped dark green leaves covered in raised, silvery spots, making it a perfect, low-maintenance statement piece for a cramped office desk or a shaded bookshelf. Staying neatly compact at just four to eight inches tall and wide, it gives you a tough, sculptural focal point that never outgrows its welcome. Best of all, unlike its close cousin the Aloe, the Gasteria 'Durban' is completely non-toxic and pet-safe, meaning you can confidently display its fascinating foliage without worrying about your curious cats or dogs taking a nibble.

When it comes to care, this resilient succulent is incredibly forgiving, especially with indoor lighting. While it prefers bright, indirect sunlight near an east- or west-facing window, it happily tolerates the lower light conditions found in north-facing rooms, making it far more adaptable than most typical desert plants. Because it expertly stores moisture in its thick, fleshy leaves, it truly thrives on a bit of beneficial neglect; you must always allow the soil to dry out completely from top to bottom before giving it a deep, thorough soak. This simple watering routine, paired with a coarse, well-draining cactus soil, prevents the shallow roots from sitting in soggy soil and rotting, perfectly mimicking the natural dry spells it experiences in its native habitat.
