One of my favorite evergreen shrubs for a low-maintenance, colorful garden is the 'Sunset' Manzanita. This isn’t just a green plant; its new growth emerges in a beautiful coppery-orange color before maturing into a lovely olive-green, giving you a dynamic color show all season long. In late winter or early spring, it produces clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers in shades of pink and white, which are a magnet for our local pollinators and hummingbirds. This manzanita grows into a dense, rounded shrub, reaching a perfect size of 4-6 feet tall and wide, making it an excellent choice for a natural hedge, a specimen plant, or a foundation planting. Plant it where it will get full sun and in well-draining soil. This plant is a true champion of drought tolerance once it is established, needing little to no supplemental water. The best part? The tough, leathery leaves and dense branching are features that deer and rabbits generally avoid, so you can enjoy this plant’s beauty worry-free.
