Tradescantia

The Tradescantia brings an incredibly vibrant splash of purple, green, and silver right into your living room with its fast-growing, cascading vines. You will love this striking trailing plant because it effortlessly adds a lush, living curtain of color to any bright window or high shelf, instantly transforming a bare room into a tropical display. Indoors, its lush trailing vines can easily reach two to three feet in length, giving you a dramatic, sweeping focal point that grows vigorously with minimal fuss. Please keep in mind that the Tradescantia is not pet-safe, as its sap can cause skin irritation and stomach upset if nibbled, so you will want to display this colorful beauty safely in a hanging basket or on a tall bookcase out of reach from curious dogs and cats.

To keep those stunning stripes looking their absolute brightest, find a spot that receives plenty of bright, indirect sunlight, such as a few feet back from an east- or west-facing window. If it sits in too much shade, the plant will stretch out and lose its brilliant purple coloring, but harsh, direct afternoon rays will easily scorch its delicate leaves. When it comes to watering, this resilient trailing plant appreciates a consistent routine; allow the top two inches of the soil to dry out completely before giving it a thorough soak. This straightforward practice ensures the roots receive plenty of oxygen and prevents root rot, perfectly mimicking the slightly dry, well-draining conditions it needs to naturally thrive in your home.
