Living in a windy area like Prescott, it is a challenge to get new trees established. That's where V-straps come in as an absolute must-have for any new tree planting. Unlike rigid ties or rough ropes that can chafe and damage delicate bark, V-straps are designed to be gentle yet firm. Giving your plant the crucial stability it needs to develop a strong, deep root system without hindering its natural sway in the wind. This subtle movement is vital, as it encourages the tree to build a sturdier trunk on its own.
Here's the simple, effective process:
- Placement is Key: Drive two sturdy stakes into the ground, about 18-24 inches from the trunk on opposite sides.
- Gentle Attachment: Loop the V-straps around the tree trunk about two-thirds of the way up. Make sure they are snug enough to support, but not so tight that they restrict the tree's natural give.
- Secure and Flexible: Attach the straps to the stakes. Your goal is firm support, but with enough flexibility for the tree to sway gently.
- Regular Checks: As your tree grows, remember to loosen the straps periodically to prevent them from digging into the trunk. After one growing season, or when your tree stands strong on its own, you can remove the stakes and straps.
Essential for all fruit trees, fast-growing shade trees, and all evergreens like spruce, pine, cypress, and juniper.
