Zebra 'Aphelandra'

The Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) is a dramatic showstopper that immediately elevates any room with its bold, white-veined emerald leaves and striking golden-yellow flower bracts. You will want this tropical beauty in your home because it brings the vibrant energy of a rainforest canopy right to your tabletop or plant stand. Indoors, this lively plant stays a perfectly manageable 1 to 2 feet tall and wide, making it an ideal centerpiece for a humid bathroom or a bright living space. To keep those famous striped leaves looking their absolute best, place your Zebra Plant in bright, indirect sunlight—a few feet back from an east or west-facing window is perfect, as direct sun will quickly scorch its delicate foliage. Best of all, this stunning houseplant is completely pet-safe, so you can enjoy its exotic flair without worrying about your curious cats and dogs exploring the leaves.

Caring for your Zebra Plant requires a bit of attention, but the reward is absolutely worth the effort. The secret to keeping this plant thriving is consistent moisture and high humidity, mirroring its natural tropical habitat. You must keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy; water it thoroughly when the top half-inch of soil feels dry to the touch, and always ensure your pot has excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Because our indoor air can be quite dry, especially when the heater or air conditioner is running, place the pot on a pebble tray filled with water or mist the leaves a few times a week to keep the edges from crisping and dropping. Give it the warmth and humidity it craves, and this eye-catching companion will reward you with spectacular foliage and blooms all year long.
