As Americans quarantine, we keep hearing how small businesses will lead the way to an improved economy.  The Prescott Chamber of Commerce honors visionary entrepreneurs, business and civic leaders, and exemplary corporate citizens leading the way in job creation, contributing to charity while introducing innovation. Watters Garden Center is awarded this year’s prestigious Excellence in Business Award for their hard work, ethics, dedication to the community, and great entrepreneurial story.

In an interview with Sheri Heiney, Prescott Chamber of Commerce CEO, she had three questions that got right to the award.

  1. Give readers a brief history and how you and Lisa feel about receiving this year’s Excellence in Business Award?

To summarize three generations of company history at Watters Garden Center would take too long. The short answer is: Ken & Lisa Watters-Lain have run the family business since the turn of this century with their children following closely in their footsteps. The environment created is therapeutic for customers, a destination focused on the plants, styles, and colors best grown in local gardens. Our staff finds Watters a place where individuals grow in knowledge and responsibility. There is a spirit built within us on communication, creativity, innovation, and fun. If you have fun, enthusiasm, and energy follow.

  1. What organizations and charities is Watters Garden Center involved with?

Lisa’s father, the founder of Watters Garden Center, created our culture from the very start. Harold Watters says, “We are not in business for profit alone, but to share God’s love and beauty to our community.” His legacy is carried forward with $81,000 given back last year to the non-profits our employees feel make a difference. Rotary International, Big Brother Big Sisters, Sharlot Hall, the LaunchPad Teen Center, public and private schools, and the list is far longer. “We partner with those we give money, providing our time, team, influence, and marketing expertise. We have a greater impact in our community this way,” says Ken Lain, owner.
